LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN
The Conference Chairman, John A. Kerner, Jr., MD, is the Director of the Nutritional Support Service at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford, Director of Pediatric Nutrition, and Professor of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, California.
Dear Colleagues:
This year is the 20th anniversary of our conference, so I wanted to make it very special! I have invited back a number of our conference’s “all-stars” – those speakers who have received high praise in the past: David Adamkin, Barbara Abrams, Sharon Collier, Michael Georgieff, Lawrence Hammer, Olivier Goulet, Thomas Robinson, and Frank Sinatra. I have also “scouted” for other top speakers, both nationally and internationally.
The program was planned to meet the specific needs of the diverse registrants. For example -
• For those whose practice is more “general”, there are presentations on human milk, lactation, pediatric formulas, celiac disease, obesity and probiotics.
• For those whose focus is neonatology, national experts will discuss human milk, key nutrients in NICU infants, the latest knowledge on necrotizing enterocolitis, and a large number of NICU-oriented workshops. The NICU workshop on the first day orients registrants for day two.
• For the high-risk obstetrics/lactation group, there are lectures on human milk, two presentations on lactation, a cutting-edge presentation on prevention of human birth defects, and a practical workshop on weight issues in pregnancy.
• For those whose focus is nutrition support, there are national and international experts discussing parenteral nutrition in hospital and at home, management of feeding disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, and intestinal failure.
We strive to make each year of our conference completely unique. We have planned a fun and nutritious reception at the Stanford Park Hotel where there will be many opportunities for networking. We hope to see you at our beautiful Stanford campus for the 20th anniversary of this exciting program!

CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION
This 20th National Conference on Advances in Perinatal and Pediatric Nutrition has been planned for health care professionals involved in the care of the pregnant woman, premature infant, and pediatric patients. The purpose of the conference is to increase knowledge of the nutritional requirements of these special need patients. A nationally renowned faculty will provide the latest and most relevant approaches to critical nutrition issues for these patient populations.
The conference will present content in a wide array of teaching styles such as didactic lectures, extensive question and answer and group discussion sessions, group workshops, and ample networking opportunities. Through this variety of teaching/learning styles, the faculty will enhance the knowledge of health care specialists in the nutritional components of maternal, infant and childhood care.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Dietitians, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, physician assistants, educators, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals interested in the nutritional requirements of high risk pregnant mothers, preterm
infants and pediatric patients.
CHILDREN, PAGERS & CELL PHONES IN MEETING ROOM
As a courtesy to others, children are not allowed in the meeting rooms. Also, we ask that participants turn off all pagers and cell phones before entering the meeting rooms. |
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
After participating in this entire conference, you should have an increased knowledge of, and be more competent to...
• Describe causes of and various treatment options for childhood obesity, as well as prevention strategies.
• Define the potential role of probiotics in primary care pediatrics and in the prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis.
• Identify how approaches to neonatal feeding affect growth and health outcomes.
• Identify key issues in breast milk for the ELBW as well as management of breastfeeding in the NICU.
• Explain the latest advances in the nutritional treatment of celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease.
• Describe the latest guidelines for both inpatient and home parenteral nutrition.
• Cite which nutrients affect brain development.
• Describe strategies to improve nutrition for the preterm baby.
• Identify the new enteral products in pediatric nutrition.
CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT
A certificate of attendance will be given upon fulfilling conference requirements, enabling you to register your credit with appropriate licensing boards or associations. To apply for credit not listed below, use the procedure established by the specific organization.
Nurses: MCCPOP (Mid-Coastal California Perinatal Outreach Program) is approved as a provider of continuing education by the California Board of Registered Nurses, Provider #3104. This program meets the qualifications for up to 23.10 hours of continuing education credits.
Behavior Science: MCCPOP is approved as a provider of continuing education by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences, Provider #1104. This program meets the qualifications for up to 19.25 hours of continuing education credits for LCSW’s, MFCC’s, and MFT’s.

Registered Pharmacists: Continuing education hours accepted by the California BRN are also accepted by the California Board of Pharmacy as 23.10 valid CE contact hours.
Each participant should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the conference.
SPECIALTY TOPIC WORKSHOP SESSIONS
Group Workshop Sessions will be held on Monday and Tuesday afternoons. These smaller group sessions will give you an opportunity to select subjects relating to your particular area of interest. You will have an opportunity to attend four topics of your choice. Please note, some of the workshops are held only once.
Please list your workshop preferences on the conference registration form in this brochure.
EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES
Each registrant will receive a conference syllabus for each day of their registration (there will be three separate syllabi). The syllabi contain pertinent information (slides and where applicable, additional reference material) on topics presented. The daily syllabi are available on paper (black and white type/photos) or on flash drives (full color). Please make your syllabus choice on the conference registration form. By requesting your daily syllabus on a flash drive, you will not receive a paper syllabus. If you request the flash drive syllabus and bring your laptop to the conference, be aware that there are no electrical outlets in the conference meeting rooms; however, there will be recharging stations in the registration area.
Extra copies of these syllabi, whether on flash drive or paper, are available for purchase by writing, with payment ($40 for each day’s paper, $10 for each day’s flash drive) to: Symposia Medicus, 399 Taylor Blvd., Suite 201, Pleasant Hill, CA 94523-2287 (please refer to syllabus #1224 and indicate type of media preferred). |
